RESEARCH: AUDIENCES

Media Effects Model

Audience Profile

Reception Theory

Reception theory focuses on the scope in textual analysis for 'negotiation' and 'opposition' on the part of the audience. This means that a text is not passively accepted by the audience but that the reader / viewer interprets the meanings of the texts based on their individual cultural background and life experiences. Stuart Hall’s encoding decoding model; dominant, negotiated and oppositional readings; why Hall says he studies culture instead of media specifically, and media hegemony.

PLANNING: AUDIENCE PROFILE

Today I started making outline notes about what my target audience for  '2020' was like
Age: 15-35
Gender: Male 60 : 40 Female

Social Bracket: Broad social bracket.
Viewers are likely to watch drama, especially comedy dramas such as 'The Inbetweeners', and other comedies such as 'Ferris Bueller's day off'.

At the cinema, they are likely to see dramas such as 'Easy A', 'Mean Girls', and 'St Trinians'. They would watch some of these films on Netflix due to the age of the films.

In their leisure time, they will look on Youtube for viral and entertaining videos, play games on their phone and laptop, listen to music, watch comedies and dramas on TV, drink Starbucks, eat at Pizza Express and McDonalds.

Clothing: Next, would be specified to teenage clothes, so mainstream brands such Palace and Supreme, but affordable so brands such as River Island would come into play as well.

Media: iPhones and Android, using the internet to connect to friends. Possibly Skype.

I have used the NME example to base my photo collage on. This was helpful as it gave a really clear example and allowed me to create this satisfying collage.

PLANNING: OUR TREATMENT

Working Title: 2020

Story:  In the year 2020,  complete war breaks out between America and Russia resulting in mass population loss. The story follows a 18 year old who is surviving on his own in his abandoned school building. After several weeks on his own living on food which was stored at the school he finds his provisions running low and his mental state decreasing. Pin's falling off of notice boards, water dripping off of pipes, all startle and alert him to become paranoid if there is someone dangerous living there as well. After realising he needs to leave as there is either a dangerous presence or he is going insane, he embarks on a journey to reconnect with human civilisation. This journey takes him outside of his comfort and brings him into contact with other survivors some friendly, some hostile.

Top Line: A lone survivor in the wake of a World War must try and connect with human civilisation after believing his place of safety is either compromised or he is going insane and beginning to imagine other presences with him, sending him insane. This results on him going on a quest to find other survivors.

Big Question: Will he be successful in finding other human survivors who are friendly, or will everyone be hostile or will there be no-one at all.

"So, if you’re aiming for your film to reach a large audience online, making sure it has universal appeal will be key. We’ll be thinking about this in more practical terms later in the week, but let’s bring Frank Ash’s points together with the last step’s concerns:

  • Think about your favourite book or film or any ‘good story’ you recently watched online, could you sum up its narrative into ‘one elegant sentence’ to provide its ‘topline’?
  • What was its big story question, and how important was it to your appreciation of the text?

PLANNING: STORYBOARD

Here is my attempt at the online storyboard maker. Although it was fun, you are very limited with what scenes you can actually use hence why my preferred choice is to hand draw them.

PLANNING: HOW TO MAKE A STORY BOARD

Here we saw (http://ocrmediaconference2014.weebly.com/workshops.html) Steve Thorne teaching about video production. This will help me with my story board as he shows us an organised and clear way of how to create one. He uses sticky notes to draw on so that he can draw on the storyboard sheet. This method will greatly help me when I make mine.

TRELLO (PLANNING)

I have made my second Trello board this year. The purpose for this one is to organise myself for the planning side of my trailer that I am going to produce. The first screenshot that I have added is to demonstrate all of the objectives that I have to fill out. The second screenshot is to show what i am currently working on or done.

RESEARCH: JUST GO WITH IT TRAILER

RESEARCH: NEED FOR SPEED TRAILER

Below you can see an 'emaze' of my research in the trailer for Need for Speed. I have researched into many different aspects of the trailer which has widened my knowledge considerably.

TRELLO (RESEARCH)

Here you can see that I have made a troll for the research aspect of my trailer that I am going to produce further into the year. By doing this it will allow me to remain organised throughout the lead up. I have added a To do, Doing and Done list. From this I will be able to clearly see what I still need to and what I need to carry on doing. This first screenshot that I have included involves everything that I will need to do in the future and the second screenshot that I have done is an updated version which shows what I have done and what I am doing.

TEACHING TRAILERS

Today in class I went onto the 'Film Education' website to research how to make a trailer. From this website I was given different genre's of successful trailers to demonstrate different examples. I then went into the 'trailer maker' and began to produce my own masterpiece. From this I was able to produce my very own trailer and begin my understanding and knowledge as to how the process is carried out.
